Noise documentation

Noise log template for neighbor and apartment noise

A clear noise log helps you turn scattered incidents into a timeline. Use it when documenting upstairs noise, late-night music, construction sounds, low-frequency hums, door slams, or other recurring noise patterns.

What to record

The goal is not to exaggerate the situation. The goal is to create a calm, consistent record that a landlord, property manager, HOA, mediator, or city office can understand quickly.

Field Example Why it matters
Date 2026-06-09 Shows whether the issue is occasional or recurring.
Start and end time 11:42 PM - 12:18 AM Helps compare the incident with lease quiet hours or local rules.
Noise type Dragging furniture, bass vibration, pounding, dog barking Specific descriptions are easier to act on than general complaints.
Location heard from Bedroom wall, ceiling, living room, hallway Helps identify patterns and possible sources.
dB-like reading Peak 72, average 54 Gives a rough reference point from the same device and room.
Recording or screenshot audio_2342.webm, screenshot_2342.png Links your written log to supporting material.
Impact Woke up, could not work, child startled Explains why the incident matters without adding emotion.
Action taken Messaged landlord, called front desk, spoke with neighbor Shows that you attempted reasonable steps.

How to use the template

  1. Record incidents for several days before sending a complaint, unless there is an emergency.
  2. Use the same room and device when possible so your readings are comparable.
  3. Keep each entry factual: what happened, when it happened, how long it lasted, and what you did.
  4. Attach short clips or screenshots only when they help explain the pattern.
  5. Check your local laws before recording conversations or private speech.
